How To Pray To God

Listen to this audio blog:

Prayer is talking to God and meditation is listening to God. They both go hand in hand for interacting with Him. A prayer can be for love of God and love for His gifts. Prayer to love Him are well defined in every religion. But for his gifts one has to devise understanding.

Of course, it is a very personal and pious act and each one knows what works best for them. As one should ideally share things one knows from one's own experience and not something one found somewhere. Here are a few things that I'd share from my experience which can help others.

Pray when your mind is still and the heart is open in devotion and love. One should meditate a while before broadcasting one's prayer to God. The prayer is far more potent when the attention is brought between the eyebrows. A deep concentrated mind is a powerful tool to create and destroy both. When the mind is quiet, our five senses are disengaged from outgoing expenditure of energy. That energy can then be brought into sharp focus by slightly raising our eyes towards the middle of the forehead behind closed eyes.

The prayer need not necessarily be chiselled into fine wordings from ancient texts. If you know them, certainly use them but God understands the sincerity and the intent behind it. Without deep concentration, mere spoken words have no power. They are only a wish list. Scores of people do it every day at the temples while they jostle and compete for their turn in front of the idol. God is everywhere including your own puja room.

It is advisable to pray to God as a divine mother or the Devi you worship. God in that manifestation symbolises love and care, just as a mother would be. Be clear in your prayer. Keep it short. Repeat it with deeper and deeper focus. If required over several days. Ask God to manifest what's best for you and not something which you would specifically like.

Do not be a beggar in front of God. Be a rightful son or daughter of God. Put high resolve and force into it lovingly. Be dynamic and enthusiastic as if talking cheerfully to a mother. Believe in the outcome of the prayer. Express your prayer and leave it in the hands of the divine mother for fruition. God loves you as his own child. He doesn't mind when you blame Him.

Do not mix up more prayers. Keep focus on one. Like asking for welfare of someone's health do not bring in your long standing request of a million dollars. Visualise the outcome of your prayer happening in real. The energies in the cosmos are subtly guided to a desired outcome by the mere focus of thoughts. Group prayers for a common cause have more intensity and results.

Pray in the affirmative. Like say 'dear lord give me success' and not 'dear lord don't fail me'.

Another example is 'dear lord make me healthy' and not 'take the disease away'. Refrain from using negative words and sentences. Every word has it's own vibration and the usage of it will attract that vibration only.

Always remember that an ungranted prayer could be your stroke of good fortune, for we do not realise what we ask for. All prayers are heard but not always granted. Not a leaf can fall without his knowing so if your prayer is not granted, its not the time yet or your past karma is the reason behind it. Nevertheless pray and meditate every day. It brings our consciousness in sync with His.
