How to Lose Mental Weight: Part 1

Most of us are constantly being weighed down by the burden of deadlines, people's expectations, responsibilities we have, personal ambitions, hurtful psychological scars, financial pressures, trust issues, personal complexes and the endless list of 'have to do' things.

These things are a constant drag on our psyche, intelligence, talents and capabilities. How can then we be happy, enthusiastic and motivated to work. It seems all right when you are temporarily motivated or inspired after talking to someone or reading an inspiring book. But does that stay with you? It is easy to be inspired but very hard to remain inspired.

Guru Nanak said that man's mind is like a stone. When immersed under running water it remains clean and shiny. The moment you remove it and keep it outside it gathers dust and moss. Similarly we have to constantly remain in an environment that inspires us. This is the reason all religions have recommended Sewa (service) to all. Being in the act of giving or serving keeps our heart open and thus pious. The stone remains under flowing water. The moment one starts taking and only taking – the stone is out of that water and starts gathering dirt. It's very important to give, share and serve for that stone to remain clean.

We understand the importance of decluttering the physical clutter in our lives. We all have that dusty box or an overhead loft filled with unrequired stuff that you have not used for years. They are not just there but it dwells in our minds too. Our resentments,complaints, failures, unmet expectations, heartbreaks, unfulfilled ambitions, revenge seeking are constant chains that we drag along as we walk in life.

Emotional baggage is a burden that we really don't have to carry. Even behind those smiling faces of celebrities, behind the confident walk of a billionaire, behind the politician's enthusiastic waving to the crowd - Iurks a sense of insecurity. An anxiety of maintaining the status quo, to remain in prominence in this ever changing dynamic world. The more you have, the more you have to lose.

Such things remain undetected, unacknowledged and unaddressed for years thereby making it a mountain to climb. It carries an immense amount of weight on our psyche and can have a devastating impact on our happiness and wellbeing. The negative emotions first house themselves in our energy body causing mental or emotional imbalance then they eventually crystalise into the physical body thereby causing diseases and ageing.

We have to work consciously towards converting Fear into Courage, Anxiety into Calmness, Guilt into Lessons, Shame into Transmutation, Regret into Inspiration, Anger into Peace, Bitterness into Sweetness, Denial to Acceptance, Sadness to Joy, Discouragement into Motivation, Self-doubt into Confidence and many more other transformations to lose this mental weight.
