A Clear Conscience Makes a Soothing Pillow

During personal counselling, all too often, I see people who are unhappy at work and they have myriad reasons for being so, they are not getting the treatment they merit; their subordinates are getting the promotion they deserved; their increment is not what they expected. This kind of mindset can make your workplace a stressful one and an honest self-appraisal is the only way that can turn around things. Just ask yourself this question. Do you really merit whatever it is that you are asking for? Talent and competence are good but even better is a positive work ethic, unblemished character, a constructive attitude and a strong sense of responsibility that will certainly change things for you and make you feel valued and appreciated.
An anxious and bothered mind can be the warehouse of downbeat, depressing considerations. When we work out of compulsion and don’t feel passionate about the contribution we make to the organization’s success, our mind starts getting tired. All of us do something or the other to make a living. We work to pay for the most basic necessities, food on our table, clothes on our back and a home to call our own. But whatever we do, never forget that honesty and integrity are two vital elements that will help make our work enjoyable and our workplace a happy space.
In the world of work, one often feels that small lies are acceptable if they are well-intentioned or they push you towards your goals. More often than not people manipulate their resumes to land jobs that they are not qualified for. Even if your ploy works and you land the job you may not be able to handle it, because in truth you are not qualified to handle it. One often finds seniors taking credit for work done by their juniors, taking office supplies and stationery home, submitting inflated bills for reimbursement, being on social media during office hours…..all these are acts of dishonesty and it actually triggers a stress response in the body. You are always afraid of being caught. It, in reality, makes you less intelligent because it agitates the neocortex of the brain, an area that handles the logical thinking process of your body.
Ethics and integrity are the very basic constituents of being happy and content at the workplace. It’s about upholding a set of personal values that reflect and reveal you as a person who can be depended upon, trusted and one who will create positive value for the growth and image of the company. You may still not get the desired raise but more importantly, you will be able to look at yourself and be proud of what you see. It will allow you to go to bed at night and sleep peacefully, happily and soundly.
